The character was initially conceived by animator and writer Chris Sanders in the late 1980s. The project didn’t materialize at the time. The character had to be shelved. It wasn’t until the late 1990s, when Disney was looking to create a new animated feature with a smaller budget, that Sanders reintroduced Stitch as the central character in what would become Lilo & Stitch
