Understanding MLB

Before you know about the path to reaching the MLB, it is important to understand the league first. The game originated from bat-and-ball games from the 19th century, when professional league formation started. There was a dead ball era where pitching was dominant, then came the live ball era where offense increased. Later, the league has grown to break its color barrier and make a cultural impact.

League division

MLB is divided into two leagues, which are the American League and the National League. Every league has an East, Central and West division. For every team, there are 162 games in the regular season, and they have to win in their division to secure a spot in the postseason wildcard round. The playoffs have a wildcard round, a divisional series and a league championship, along with other world series.

Both the AL and NL follow almost the same rules, but the AL has a designated hitter who bats for the pitcher. NL does not follow the designated heater process, so the picture also needs to bat. There are some other minor rule differences, like the tiebreaker rule and interleague regulation that makes them different. They have important positions like pitcher, catcher, infielder, outfielder and designated hitter.
